Ebola: Nigerian professor urges citizens to avoid kisses, hugs and handshakes

The President of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria, Professor Oladapo Ashiru, has urged Nigerians to avoid kisses, handshakes, hugs and unnecessary physical contact following the confirmation of an imported Ebola case in Abuja.

Ashiru gave the advice on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television, explaining that Ebola spreads primarily through direct contact with the blood and body fluids of an infected person showing symptoms, rather than through the air.

“Ebola is not airborne. But avoid kisses, hugs and handshakes,” he said.

The professor urged Nigerians to maintain physical distance and observe strict hygiene and infection prevention measures to reduce the risk of transmission.

He also called for the immediate activation of high-alert protocols nationwide, including enhanced screening at airports, seaports and land borders, alongside strict infection control measures in healthcare facilities.

Ashiru further urged healthcare workers to maintain a high index of suspicion for possible Ebola cases and promptly isolate suspected patients to prevent further transmission.

His warning follows the Federal Ministry of Health’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, the female patient arrived in Nigeria from Uganda, developed symptoms on October 7 and tested positive for the virus on October 20.

A total of 44 contacts have reportedly been identified as health authorities intensify efforts to monitor potential exposure and prevent the spread of the virus.
